Kaiseki of Echizen — Hama-machi, Fukui
A Quiet Kaiseki House in Hama-machi
Obata sits along the Asuwa River in Hama-machi, a district of Fukui still graced by the atmosphere of its former ryotei quarter. Here we serve Kaiseki — a multi-course Japanese tasting menu — built around the seasonal bounty of Echizen, the historical name for present-day Fukui.
A blue-green moss garden welcomes you at the entrance. Inside you will find a special room overlooking that garden, a counter where the chef works in front of you, and private rooms with views onto the rear courtyard. Whether for a private celebration, a business gathering, or a memorable meal during your travels in Fukui, we hope you will find your moment with us.
Please enjoy the finest tastes of Fukui, served with our deepest hospitality.
Seasonal Kaiseki of Echizen
Our omakase Kaiseki courses draw on the mountains and clear waters of Fukui — Etsuzan-Jakusui, as the old phrase describes the land. Each meal opens in the traditional Kaiseki rhythm and rises to a centerpiece of freshly fried tempura prepared at the counter. In winter, Echizen Crab takes the stage in a special seasonal menu.
Echizen Crab Course
From ¥45,000 — A full course featuring “tribute-grade” Echizen Crab (snow crab from the Sea of Japan), prepared as sashimi, grilled, and boiled. Available November to early May.
Echizen Nodoguro Kaiseki
¥26,500 — Blackthroat Seaperch, rich with winter fat, prepared in the Obata style. A deep, refined umami unique to this season of the cold Echizen sea.
Mizu-gani Kaiseki
¥22,000 — Soft-shell snow crab caught just after molting. A rare, fleeting delicacy of late winter, served freshly boiled. Available late February through March.
